WHAT IS ROTATIONAL MOLDING?
Rotational molding is a manufacturing process used to create hollow, seamless plastic parts by heating a mold filled with plastic resin while rotating it slowly around two axes. Polyethylene is the most common resin used. The process produces strong, durable parts with even wall thickness and no internal stresses, making it ideal for products that need to be both lightweight and tough.
THE BASIC SCIENCE BEHIND IT
Rotomolding relies on centrifugal force, gravity, and heat rather than pressure (unlike injection or blow molding).
As the mold rotates, and heats up the plastic P/E inside coats and sticks to the inner surface of the mold, forming a uniform layer from the outside first and continually adding layers towards the center of the part. Since there’s no pressure, the tooling doesn’t need to be as heavy duty resulting in a significantly less expensive initial start up cost compared to injection molding.
